Our people had taboos about certain topics, topics that we did not talk about. It was not that these topics were never discussed. Some topics were discussed only when people are "old enough". Or when people had enough background knowledge that they could under stand.

Other topics were discussed quietly and not often. This was done to show respect for certain animals, for instance. We believed that some animals did not like to be talked about. For example, one topic that was never discussed with children until they reached their teens, was sex. A topic that was discussed or mentioned quietly was the otter. We believed that the otter spirit lived in most women. It was a good spirit with them. If a man has the otter spirit, this caused him great harm. He would not be well again until the otter spirit was removed.
